Te Tūranga | About the role

Tauranga is one of the fastest growing cities in New Zealand, with many exciting residential and pivotal commercial projects both planned and underway.  Our Building Services team plays an important role in making this happen, by ensuring  these buildings across the city are safe, compliant, and fit for the people who live, work, and visit here.

After a great response to our first campaign, we’ve opened another opportunity for a qualified and competent Building Control Officer – Processing to join the team. If you have current residential or commercial processing competency and are looking for a great  opportunity to help shape your city, while working in a supportive, knowledgeable and high performing team, we’d love to hear from you.

In this role, you’ll assess and certify building consent applications, reviewing plans and supporting documentation to ensure they meet the requirements of the Building Act 2004, Building Code, and relevant regulations. You’ll provide clear, practical advice to customers and industry professionals, make sound technical decisions, and help ensure applications are processed accurately and within statutory timeframes.

This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys technical assessment work, has strong attention to detail, and wants to contribute to good building outcomes across Tauranga. You’ll be part of a team that values your expertise, supports ongoing learning, and works together to deliver a professional and customer-focused service.

We offer a competency-based pay system, meaning your salary increases as your competency level grows. You’ll also benefit from flexible working arrangements, five weeks’ annual leave, and ongoing training and development to help keep your skills current and aligned with industry and legislative changes.

What you’ll be doing

You’ll help deliver professional, high-quality building consent processing services for a range of residential, commercial, and industrial building projects. Day to day, this will include:

  • assessing building consent applications, plans, and technical documentation
  • checking compliance with the Building Act 2004, Building Code, and related regulations
  • certifying applications and supporting timely, accurate consent decisions
  • providing clear technical advice to customers, designers, and industry professionals
  • interpreting legislation, regulations, standards, and acceptable solutions
  • maintaining accurate records and completing processing documentation
  • working with colleagues to support consistent, high-quality decision-making
  • contributing to continuous improvement across Building Services

Ngā Pukenga | What you’ll need to succeed

We’re looking for someone with strong technical judgement, current building consent processing competency, and a practical, customer-focused approach. You’ll bring:

  • a Regulation 18 qualification under the Building (Accreditation of Building Consent Authorities) Regulations 2006
  • current residential or commercial processing competency
  • proven experience in building consent processing or a related building control role
  • strong knowledge of the Building Act 2004, Building Code, and associated regulations
  • the ability to interpret legislation and apply it in a practical and consistent way
  • excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • confidence explaining technical information clearly to a range of customers
