Te Tūranga | About the role
Animal Services plays an important role in helping keep our community safe and supporting responsible animal ownership across Tauranga. The team works across education, compliance and customer service, administering legislation and bylaws relating to dogs, stock and other animals.
We’re looking for an Animal Services Officer to join the team in a varied, community-facing role. You’ll respond to and investigate complaints such as dog attacks, roaming stock and crowing roosters, making sure each matter is handled fairly, professionally and to a high legal standard. From time to time, you may also be required to give evidence in Court.
This is a role where no two days are quite the same. You’ll spend much of your time out in the community, talking with residents, resolving issues, supporting responsible dog ownership and attending community events to help people understand what Animal Services does.
A council vehicle and equipment will be provided, as this role is primarily field based and your vehicle will be your main work base. You’ll need a full Class 1 driver licence and confidence using digital systems, as enquiries are received, updated and completed electronically while you are out in the field.
Our focus is to enhance the safety of people in Tauranga while encouraging responsible animal ownership. While we work hard to reunite impounded dogs with their owners, there may be times where dogs are not collected and are not suitable to be rehomed. In these situations, part of the role may involve assisting a veterinarian with euthanasia.
This is a full-time role, working 40 hours per week. Hours are primarily Monday to Friday, with flexibility between 6am and 6pm. Some flexibility is needed to support events or special operations outside of normal hours.
Ngā Pukenga | What you’ll need to succeed
You’ll be a confident communicator who can build rapport with a wide range of people and stay calm when situations become challenging. You’ll be comfortable working independently, managing conflict or disputes, and taking a practical, resolution-focused approach.
An affinity with animals is important, along with the resilience to work through situations that can be confronting or emotionally difficult.
It would be helpful, but is not essential, if you bring:
- A National Certificate in Compliance and Regulatory Control
- Experience working in a compliance, regulatory or enforcement role
