Te Tūranga | About the role

This is a 12 month fixed term vacancy covering the Environmental Health Officer / Food Verifier position, , you’ll play a key role in protecting and improving the health and wellbeing of our community. You’ll work across Tauranga to support, educate and regulate food businesses and other regulated premises, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and Council bylaws.

This is a varied, hands‑on role where education comes first, supported by fair and consistent enforcement when needed. You’ll work closely with local businesses, colleagues and the wider community to prevent harm, manage risk and promote safe, healthy environments.

Ngā Pukenga | What you’ll need to succeed

To succeed in this role, you’ll bring:

  • A National Diploma in Environmental Health Science (NZ), or an equivalent qualification recognised under the Environmental Health Officers Qualifications Regulations 1993, or
  • A relevant degree in Food Science, Food Technology or a similar field
  • Experience or strong capability in food verification, inspections and regulatory work
  • Sound judgement, with the ability to assess risk and resolve issues calmly and fairly
  • Clear communication skills and a professional, customer‑focused approach
  • A commitment to upholding Te Tiriti o Waitangi and working respectfully with tangata whenua
