Te Tūranga | About the role

As a Principal Wastewater Planner, you’ll lead the way in planning Tauranga’s wastewater network so our city can grow and thrive. You’ll make sure our strategies are up to date, projects are well planned, and our infrastructure meets community needs and environmental standards.

Here’s what you’ll actually do:

  • Shape the big picture – develop and update wastewater strategies so they align with national and regional plans.
  • Plan for growth – identify future projects, prepare them for delivery, and make sure they’re included in long-term plans.
  • Solve problems early – review planning applications to prevent issues that could affect the network.
  • Work with others – collaborate with SmartGrowth, developers, and other councils to make sure wastewater planning supports city development.
  • Advocate for Tauranga – represent our city in regional planning discussions and ensure our interests are heard.
  • Provide expert advice – support managers and teams with technical guidance and help find practical solutions to complex challenges.

 

Ngā Pukenga | What you’ll need to succeed

To succeed in this role, you’ll bring:

  • A degree in Civil Engineering or a similar qualification.
  • 10+ years’ experience in water planning, with a strong focus on wastewater.
  • Proven leadership skills—whether leading a team or projects.
  • Solid technical knowledge of wastewater networks and treatment systems.
  • Experience working in New Zealand’s regulatory environment.
  • Great communication and relationship-building skills.
