Te Tūranga | About the role

We’re looking for a Senior Transport Engineer to join our Transportation team and help deliver safe, practical, and future-focused transport outcomes for Tauranga.

In this role, you’ll use your technical expertise to support a wide range of transport engineering work, from safety investigations and design reviews through to resource consent assessments, development approvals, and advice on traffic and transport matters. You’ll work closely with other teams across Council, as well as consultants, developers, partners, and the community, to help find practical solutions that support a safe and efficient transport network.

This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys variety, problem-solving, and seeing projects through from design to completion. Tauranga has a strong pipeline of major projects ahead, so you’ll be contributing to work that has a visible impact on the city and the people who move around it every day.

What you’ll be doing

  • providing trusted transport engineering advice across a range of projects, developments, and customer requests
  • reviewing transport designs and supporting gateway approval processes, including safety audits
  • assessing traffic and transport matters for resource and subdivision consent applications
  • investigating transport safety issues and helping develop practical solutions
  • working with planners, asset teams, project teams, developers, consultants, and external partners
  • contributing to major projects that help make Tauranga’s transport network safer, more efficient, and fit for purpose
  • sharing your technical knowledge and supporting the development of others in the team
  • helping improve guidelines, standards, processes, and ways of working.

Ngā Pukenga | What you’ll need to succeed

We’re keen to hear from experienced transport or traffic engineers who enjoy working through complex issues, making sound decisions, and building strong working relationships.

To succeed in this role, you’ll bring:

  • a relevant civil, traffic, or transport engineering qualification
  • strong experience in traffic safety, transport engineering, or a similar field
  • confidence providing technical advice and making well-reasoned recommendations
  • experience reviewing designs, assessing transport impacts, or supporting resource consent processes
  • a good understanding of relevant legislation, standards, and engineering practice
  • clear communication skills and the ability to work well with a wide range of people
  • a practical, solutions-focused approach and the ability to balance technical detail with wider community outcomes.

Experience with safety audits, resource consent assessments, local government, or AutoCAD would be helpful, but it’s not essential. If any of these areas are part of your background, we’d love to hear about them in your application
