Te Tūranga | About the role

Join our team in a varied engineering role where you'll assess technical matters across a range of building consent applications. The role has a primary focus on development engineering within the building consent process, not subdivision or land development, while also encompassing structural engineering assessment as part of a broader engineering workload.

You'll provide engineering review and assessment of consent applications, helping ensure proposals meet legislative requirements, the Building Code, accepted engineering standards, and Council requirements. Much of your work will involve geotechnical considerations, natural hazards, landforms, stormwater management and related infrastructure, alongside assessing structural engineering aspects of building consent applications. This combination offers a diverse and technically rewarding role, supporting a wide range of projects and maintaining capability across the engineering team.

If you enjoy applying your technical knowledge, working through complex information, and helping people achieve compliant outcomes, this could be a great next step. You’ll be involved in:

  • Reviewing building consent applications and advising on geotechnical matters, natural hazards, landforms, stormwater management, infrastructure, and relevant standards.
  • Managing assigned applications through the engineering review process, including technical assessment, providing advice, and maintaining accurate consent records.
  • Working with applicants, engineers, consultants, planners, asset managers, building owners, and Council teams to achieve compliant outcomes.
  • Assessing structural aspects of building consent applications, including undertaking 2D or 3D analysis where appropriate.
  • Helping improve systems and processes and, on occasion, providing expert technical advice for hearings or legal proceedings relating to the Building Act, Building Code, and relevant standards.

Ngā Pukenga | What you’ll need to succeed

You’ll bring a practical approach, clear communication skills, and the confidence to work through complex engineering matters. To succeed in this role, you’ll have:

  • An engineering degree at Level 8 recognised under the Washington Accord.
  • The ability to review geotechnical, natural hazard, infrastructure, and other technical information relating to building consent applications.
  • The ability to make consistent, well-reasoned decisions and explain technical matters clearly.
  • Structural engineering knowledge that enables you to assess and provide advice on applications when required.
  • The ability to build effective working relationships with applicants, consultants, colleagues, and other stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of the Building Act, Building Code, and relevant engineering standards, or the ability to build this knowledge in the role.
