Join our team this summer and inspire young readers. Over one thousand children, aged 0-18, take part in our annual Kia Kaha te Pānui reading challenge. Our Student Assistants will be a vital part of these children’s reading journeys this summer.
Te Tūranga | About the role
As a Student Assistant you will:

Have Engaging Conversations: Actively listen to children as they share their thoughts about the books they have read, encouraging their enthusiasm for reading. Your ability to engage in meaningful and enjoyable conversations will foster their love of reading.

Run Activities: Facilitate and lead pre-planned activities that complement their reading experience.

Encourage and Support: Provide positive reinforcement and support to children as they navigate their reading journeys. Your kindness and enthusiasm will help to create a fun, safe and welcoming environment for even the most reluctant reader.

Collaborate: Work closely with our team to ensure the wider challenge runs smoothly and data is well managed.
Ngā Pukenga | What you'll need to succeed

Minimum of NCEA L2
-
Team player with well-developed communication skills
-
Drivers license with reliable transport

A patient, friendly, and encouraging demeanour

Ability to work both independently and as part of a team

Ability to self-manage and show initiative in busy environments
It is not necessary to have formal work experience to apply for these positions, but you may want to illustrate your experience with:
Working with children
Club/team activities
Any extra responsibilities you have held at school, university or through volunteer organisations
Te Tukanga | How to apply
There are 4 positions available –
Te Ao Mārama – Tauranga Library, Tuesday to Saturday, 16 hours per week
Te Ao Mārama – Pāpāmoa Library, Tuesday to Saturday, 16 hours per week
Te Ao Mārama – Greerton Library, Tuesday to Saturday, 16 hours per week
Te Ao Mārama – Mount Maunganui Library, Tuesday to Saturday, 16 hours per week
When submitting your application, please note the locations you would be willing to work at, ranking your preference.
The positions start on the 8th of December and finish on the 31st of January with a mandatory leave period of the 25th of December to the 2nd of January. No additional annual leave will be approved outside of the shutdown period.
