Te Tūranga | About the role

The digital services that support Tauranga City Council and our community rely on strong foundations. Whether it's secure systems that protect critical information or network infrastructure that keeps our organisation connected, these capabilities are essential to how we deliver services today and prepare for the future.

We're looking for experienced technical leaders to join our Digital Services team in two specialist roles:

  • Technical Lead - Security
  • Technical Lead - Network

Both roles provide specialist technical leadership, strategic guidance and architectural expertise across their respective domains. You'll be a trusted advisor, technical mentor and escalation point, helping shape future platform strategy while supporting the delivery of secure, resilient and modern digital services.

These are opportunities to influence how technology evolves across one of New Zealand's fastest-growing cities, working across architecture, platform strategy, innovation and continuous improvement initiatives.

Technical Lead - Security

As our Technical Lead - Security, you'll help protect the systems, information and digital services that support Tauranga City Council. You'll provide leadership across security architecture, platform strategy and technical security delivery, ensuring security is embedded into technology decisions from the outset.

You'll:

  • lead technical direction across Council's security platforms and environment
  • shape security architecture, standards and future security strategy
  • champion secure-by-design principles across Digital Services
  • drive continuous improvement initiatives that strengthen resilience and reduce risk
  • provide mentoring, coaching and thought leadership to technical teams
  • act as the primary technical escalation point across Council's security infrastructure.

Technical Lead - Network

As our Technical Lead - Network, you'll help build and evolve the digital foundations that keep Council connected. You'll provide specialist leadership across network architecture, connectivity, platform design and infrastructure strategy to ensure our environment remains reliable, resilient and capable of supporting future growth.

You'll:

  • lead technical direction across Council's enterprise network environment
  • shape network architecture, connectivity and platform roadmaps
  • drive resilience, performance and continuous improvement initiatives
  • provide technical leadership for infrastructure design and implementation
  • mentor and support technical teams across the organisation
  • act as the primary technical escalation point for Council's network infrastructure.

The impact you'll have:

While each role has a different technical focus, both play a critical role in enabling Tauranga City Council's future.

The Technical Lead - Security helps ensure Council's information, systems and digital services remain secure, trusted and resilient in an increasingly complex cyber environment.

The Technical Lead - Network helps ensure the underlying infrastructure that powers Council's services remain reliable, scalable and ready for future demands.

Together, these roles help create a modern, secure and connected technology environment that supports better outcomes for our organisation and our community.

Ngā Pukenga | What you’ll need to succeed

For both opportunities, you'll bring significant technical expertise, a passion for continuous improvement and the ability to influence and guide others through complex technical challenges.

You'll ideally have:

  • a tertiary qualification in Information Technology or equivalent professional experience
  • 10+ years' experience in a relevant technical leadership environment
  • experience working within Agile, DevOps and ITIL delivery models
  • experience supporting architecture, planning and technical design activities
  • strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills
  • proven mentoring, coaching and technical leadership capability
  • excellent planning, prioritisation and delivery skills.

For the Technical Lead - Security role, CISSP, CISM or equivalent security certifications will be highly regarded.

For the Technical Lead - Network role, professional infrastructure, networking or cloud certifications will be highly regarded.
