Te Tūranga | About the role

We’re looking for an experienced council Trade Waste Specialist to protect Tauranga’s wastewater network and environment by managing and improving trade waste discharges across a portfolio of commercial and industrial customers. You’ll use the full council toolkit—education, licensing, compliance monitoring and enforcement—to deliver safe, compliant outcomes, and you’ll help improve our systems and processes (including online licensing and charging data) so we can provide a consistent customer experience.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Inspect and monitor premises that discharge trade waste, and follow up promptly when licence conditions aren’t met.
  • Investigate illegal or inappropriate discharges and manage enforcement of the Trade Waste Bylaw.
  • Encourage and advise customers on better environmental solutions for water use and discharge quality.
  • Process building consent and PIM applications, and run annual audits and discharge testing.
  • Keep trade waste licences current when a site’s use changes.
  • Implement and continuously improve online processes for trade waste applications and licensing.
  • Coordinate and capture discharge data so charges are calculated accurately.
  • Lead education and stakeholder conversations around trade waste and respond to incidents when they occur.

Ngā Pukenga | What you’ll need to succeed

  • A relevant qualification (science, environmental health, engineering or similar) is required, along with a strong commitment to Health & Safety when working on site.
  • Trade waste experience is essential. You’ll have hands-on experience working with trade waste licences/permits and monitoring compliance.
  • At least 3–5 years in a dedicated trade waste role, including organising sampling and testing, and understanding what the results mean.
  • A good understanding of common trade waste contaminants, pre-treatment, and the impacts on the wastewater network and treatment plant.
  • Confidence to investigate non-compliance, gather the right information, and take a fair, practical approach to education and enforcement.
