Te Tūranga | About the role
Help keep Tauranga’s water flowing — safely and reliably. We’re looking for a skilled Water Engineer to help manage the day-to-day operations and maintenance of Tauranga’s water reticulation network. This role ensures our water supply meets public health standards and service expectations through smart planning, contract oversight, and quick response when issues arise.
You’ll work alongside a long-standing team member who is preparing for retirement. This is a great opportunity to learn from their experience, share responsibilities, and knowledge.
In this role, you’ll:
· Manage the daily operations and maintenance of the city’s water network.
· Make sure water services meet public health, water quality and service level standards.
· Lead the response to major pipe breaks and water supply issues — available to respond to after hour callson a shared basis.
· Monitor the network to maintain service levels and respond to alarms and incidents.
· Activate the incident response plan when needed and provide technical support to keep the network running smoothly.
· Oversee the Water Reticulation Maintenance Contract and ensure high-quality delivery.
· Plan and coordinate maintenance shutdowns to reduce service disruptions.
· Carry out on-site audits for quality and health & safety.
· Keep asset information up to date in Council systems and support planning for water asset renewals.
· Review contractor claims, monitor budgets, and track major water main breaks.
· Respond to customer and stakeholder queries about water maintenance.
Ngā Pukenga | What you’ll need to succeed
To succeed in this role, you’ll bring:
· At least 10 years experience in water network operations and maintenance.
· Knowledge of water supply regulations and public health standards.
· Strong contract management experience .
· Good communication and problem-solving abilities.
· Relevant engineering qualifications.
· A collaborative approach to learning and sharing knowledge.
· Valid driver’s licence.
