Johann Schryvers, Supervisor: BCO Inspections

Johann leads a team of building control officers, or building inspectors, focusing on the Pyes Pā area. The team’s role is to ensure that buildings are safe for the people who will be using them. They see buildings grow from the ground up, at all stages of the inspection process, and engage with developers, tradies and building/home-owners on their new creation.

Some of our building staff are former tradies ready for a break from the tools. Johann was a licenced building practitioner before joining TCC in 2018. A trade qualification in construction, design or building surveying is required for the role. A large part of the role is focused on ongoing education, as building compliance is constantly evolving. The inspectors are assessed annually and keep a record of learning throughout the year.

Johan’s favourite part of the job is inspecting the completed project. “The final inspection is usually the hardest one, but it’s also the most rewarding, seeing all the hard work through to completion. Some of the architecturally designed homes we have here in Tauranga are on par with things you see on grand design programmes. It’s amazing what is constructed using out-of-the-box design and materials not common with basic buildings.”

Aside from the job, Johann takes full advantage of the social activities and development opportunities available for TCC staff. “In my time here, I’ve been involved with the TCC Social Club Committee, the Intercouncil sports tournament, Outward Bound and recently, the Australasian Management Challenge – a leadership development programme where you compete against other councils across the country. All have been very rewarding and a great way to meet people within the organisation.”

Johann highly recommends a career in construction. “Construction is broad and not just limited to being a builder. Building knowledge is a great base and can lead you into design, sales/supply, management and compliance. There’s a lot of scope to grow and have a fulfilling career.”
