The City Operations Team is a newly established division within Tauranga City Council, responsible for maintaining Tauranga’s green spaces and a portfolio of Council-owned buildings and assets. Currently consisting of 115 community-focused individuals, the team is poised for significant growth this year, expanding to over 160 team members as we take on additional services for the city.

Te Tūranga | About the role 

We are looking for a unique and dedicated leader to take charge of managing Tauranga’s roadside vegetation and ensuring the community remains safe as a result. This is a relentless and demanding task, involving mowing every roadside on an 8-week cycle, then starting again from the beginning! As the City Operations team transitions this service in-house, this role offers a unique opportunity to make a significant impact on the success of this newly formed team. 

This position will present its challenges, but here are some of the key responsibilities: 

• Leading a team of 10 operators in delivering high-quality work, including mowing, edging, spraying, and more. 

• Managing all people-related aspects, such as performance management, recruitment, training, coaching, and inspiring the team. 

• Overseeing complex resource planning, scheduling, and route optimization. 

• Coordinating daily traffic management to ensure smooth operations. 

This role reports directly to the Team Leader – Streetscapes.  

Ngā Pukenga | What you’ll need to succeed within the City Operations Team 

• Full clean Class 2 NZ driver's license ideally, or willingness to get it. 

• 5 years + leading a complex operational open space management team or similar.  

• Great communication skills.  

• Strong computer skills.  

• A proven Health and Safety focus. Traffic management qualifications preferred/ strong working knowledge of CoPTTM and NZGTTM.
